This year marks half-century since the start of construction of Egypt’s Aswan High Dam. The huge lake behind the dam served to store excess water from the annual inundation, thus saving Egypt from the hazards of floods that were occasionally too-high or too-low, and securing a regular supply of water. But in the process, some of Egypt’s most magnificent ancient monuments would have drowned. It took the combined effort of several nations to rescue these monuments and save them as the valuable heritage for all humanity that they are. It is now 42 years since these monuments have been saved and open to the public. ++Watani++ reports on the two most important of the monuments saved, and the epic effort that went into rescuing them.
