The monastery of Mar Mina in Maryut, some 70km southwest Alexandria, as well as the monasteries of Anba Bishoi, al-Suryan, and al-Baramous in Wadi Natroun in the Western Desert, have announced they are closing their gates to visitors starting last Wednesday and until 14 October. The closure comes in the wake of threats of terrorist action against the monasteries.
A source from Anba Bishoi monastery, who asked to remain un-named, told Watani that security sources informed the monasteries of the danger; in the meantime threats against the monasteries were posted on the Internet. The same source blamed the threats on the false, extremist notions propagated by some Islamist writers that the desert monasteries were centres of Christianising Muslims and hid caches of weapons.
The four-day national holiday which begins next Tuesday to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the feast which marks the end of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, was expected to bring droves of visitors to the monasteries.
