Anba Yu’annis, Bishop of Assiut, had a road accident while on his way from Assiut, some 350km south of Cairo, to Cairo on the evening of Tuesday 11 December.
The Bishop was moved to al-Hayat Hospital in Heliopolis, Cairo, where he underwent bone surgery. This morning he made an appearance on CTV channel to reassure Copts that he was doing well. He asked for their prayers, and reminded them to participate in the traditional Midnight Praise of the Coptic month of Kiahk which precedes Coptic Christmas on 7 January. Kiahk Praise is dedicated to the Holy Virgin, and includes some of the most beautiful melodies in Coptic chants.
Anba Yu’annis is famous for his eager performance of Kiahk Praise. He had been heading to Cairo to preside over a Kiahk Praise evening at the church of the Holy Virgin in Ard al- Golf when the accident occurred.
