The Coptic Orthodox Church issued a statement on 13 July 2020, declaring extension of church closure in Cairo and Alexandria, on account of COVID-19, till Monday 3 August 2020. After that date, the statement said, Masses would gradually resume.
Cairo and Alexandria parishes are under the jurisdiction of Pope Tawadros II. They have reported the highest figures of COVID-19 infections in Egypt.
The recent decision comes in line with the decisions taken by the Standing Committee of the Coptic Orthodox Holy Synod in its [online] meeting on 27 June 2020 when it was decided to leave the decision of reopening churches to the discretion of each bishop according to conditions of COVID-19 in his diocese. In all cases, highest standards of protective measures against infection are implemented.
