Fr Daniel Ibrahim, 36, pastor of the church of the Holy Virgin in the village of al-Hawatka in Manfalout, Assiut, some 350km south of Cairo, passed away two days ago after drinking polluted water following Holy Mass. Another priest at the same church, Fr Aghnatius Gamal, and four deacons fell ill after drinking of the same water. They were all moved to hospital and given treatment, but Fr Daniel did not survive. His funeral was held yesterday at the church of al-Amir Tadros in Manfalout where his body was buried.
Investigations revealed that the water came from a tank that has been out of use for a long time and the water filter of which did not undergo any maintenance.
