The Copts Without Restrictions (CWR) movement has waged a harsh attack against the Copts 38 Union, a movement established a year ago to campaign for changes to the Coptic Church’s strict divorce laws.
In a statement issued today, CWR strongly criticised Copts 38 for handing a memorandum to the Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed al-Biltagui, in which they demanded that Islamic sharia [famous for its lenient divorce rules, unilaterally in the hands of men] should be invoked in Egypt’s new constitution. Copts 38 wrote that Islamic sharia abrogates all earlier legislation.
The CWR statement declared that any talk about Coptic wishes to apply Islamic sharia to their family law was false, and that promoting such allegations was pathetic. “Whether you like it or not, our law is the law of a single wife. The Holy Bible as our sole reference, and no power on earth can trifle with the fundamentals of our faith.”
“If Biltagui and his group [the Muslim Brotherhood] wish to listen to the real Coptic voice and not to the whimpering of a few who do not represent us, we can make him hear us roar loud enough to shake the earth under his feet if he thinks we will allow the Constituent Assembly to pass articles that trifle with our core faith,” the CWR statement said.
