Sunday 16 September, during the Holy Mass in the church of the Martyrs of Faith and the Nation in al-Our, Minya, some 250km south of Cairo, Anba Pavnotius, Bishop of Samalout, ordained 40 altar boys. They were ranked as “Psaltos”, Coptic for cantor chanter.
The Church of the Martyrs of Faith and the Nation was consecrated last February in honour of the 20 Egyptians who were beheaded for their faith in February 2015 in Sirte, Libya, at the hands of Daesh, also known as the Islamic State (IS). It was constructed on the outskirts of the village of al- Our, birthplace of 13 of the martyrs, by the Armed Forces, and named by President Sisi himself. The bodies of the martyrs, which were flown from Libya earlier this year, are held in a shrine in the church.
