Pope Tawadros II has sent President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi a message of condolence for losing his mother, Suad al-Sisi, saying that he was praying for the Lord to grant the President comfort.
President Sisi’s mother died this morning at al-Galaa’ Hospital in Cairo after a long struggle with liver and bone diseases. She was 80.
The funeral and burial were held this afternoon, and were mainly attended by the family.
Sources in the presidency said that the President had asked those who wished to convey their condolences to him through paid newspaper advertisements to refrain from doing so and donate the money instead to the Tahya Misr (Long Live Egypt) fund, a public fund used to finance national projects.
President Sisi is known to have been close to his mother. He once said he was lucky to have had her for a mother, and that he would always wear a silver ring she had once given him. The deceased had eight children, three boys among whom is the current president, and three girls.
