During his visit to Armenia to participate in the commemoration of the centenary of the Armenian genocide at the hands of the Turks, Pope Tawadros II paid a visit to Haghartsin Monastery where the relics of St Gregory the Illuminator are buried. St Gregory the Illuminator is a fourth century saint, and is the patron saint of Armenia. He is revered by the Coptic Orthodox Church and his name included among the assembly of saints mentioned during Coptic Holy Mass.
The Haghartsin Monastery was built in the 13th century, and the relics of St Gregory are buried beneath the altar in the church there.
