The week-long prayers for Christian unity, which started on 9th February under the motto: We will all change by the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, will end today by the weekly lecture given/delivered by his Holiness Pope Shenouda III. Christian families participated in the week-long prayers in churches across Cairo/Egypt. Heads of all Egyptian Churches in Egypt are expected to attend tonight’s lecture and participate in the prayers for unity.
“Christians around the world aspire to see all Christians united under the leadership of one Church,” Rev Kyrollos, the Coptic Catholic Archbishop of Assiut and the Patriarchal head of the Coptic Catholic Church told Watani. “Unity is among Christ’s basic teachings,” reminded Rev Kyrollos, pointing out that the Catholic Church often prays for the unity of Churches. But there are historical reasons that stand in the way of the swift achievement of this unity that we long for, he explained. “I know that it will take time, but I believe in the value of prayers, and I am confident that unity is a gift from God, that He alone is capable of bestowing on us. The effort that we, as humans, can do, is to pray, in order to prepare our hearts and overcome the obstacles,” said Rev Kyrollos to Watani. “If we live the life of love, we will pave the path for God’s work in us towards the unity of the Church,” he stressed.
Rev Kyrollos revealed that the Churches in Egypt wish to form an Egyptian Churches Council that would run under the auspices of the Middle East Churches Council. The Egyptian council would aim at joining the four main Churches in Egypt, which are the Coptic Orthodox; the Roman Orthodox; the Catholic and the Evangelical, through engaging them in mutual activities and reunions. He said that a meeting concerning this issue already took place some three weeks ago. Another meeting is scheduled on 21st February, he added, where a vision is to be developed for the Egypt’s council as well as a plan of the activities.
