7 August 2011
Today marks the beginning of the fast of the Holy Virgin, which Copts honour for 15 days until the feast of her Assumption on 22 August. The time is one of joy and celebration, with Holy Mass held every morning, and prayers and praises every evening in churches all over Egypt.
The painting, by Wagdy Habashy, is entitled al-Hamama al-Hassnaa (The Lovely Dove), one of the names frequently given to the Holy Virgin. Habashy painted St Mary with the attributes of a gentle dove: serene and pure like a white rose. She is depicted lifting her hands in submission and obedience to her God and Son—Jesus Christ. Despite her lovely smile, a tinge of sadness envelops her.
May her blessings be with Egypt and its people.
Watani wishes its readers a blessed fast.
