The Bishopric of Shubral-Kheima in the north of Cairo has sent a distress call for President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi. Father Karass Saleeb pleaded with the President to give orders to the security authorities in Shubral-Kheima to step in and put an end to assaults by Muslim fundamentalists against the Church-owned St Joseph community centre in the district of Mantai in Shubral-Kheima. The building, which is only partially erected and yet under construction, and is backed by all the official permits has been the target of successive Islamist attacks, with the fundamentalists driving away the construction workers and vowing they would bring down the building if it were ever erected.
The St Joseph centre houses services for the poor, the sick, the aged, persons with disability, and underage women who need help. Fr Karass’s call said: “We, the Copts of Mantai whose numbers exceed 10,000 ask for your help us against extremists and hired thugs who are well-known to the locals and the police. We demand positive security presence to prevent further clashes and losses.”
