The Sohag Court of Misdemeanours yesterday adjourned to 18 September to rule in the case of Bishoi Kamel, the Coptic teacher who was charged with deriding Islam. Kamel was said to have posted on his Facebook page text and pictures that deride Islam, the Prophet Mohamed and President Mursi.
Large numbers of hardline Muslims crowded in the court grounds yesterday, shouting Islamic slogans and cheering against Kamel. According to Naguib Gabrail, head of the Egyptian Union for Human Rights (EUHR) a number of the Islamist crowd detained inside the court grounds the lawyer Joseph Salah who is a member of the EUHR and who represented Kamel, following his defence of Kamel.
Kamel##s defence handed the court a CD of a video recording of a person named Michael who confessed he had inserted the sentences that disdain Islam on Kamel##s Facebook account.
The official information intelligence submitted to the court a report confirming that there were two Facebook accounts with the name and photograph of Kamel. The report said that there was a warning on one of them that somebody had hacked the account and published material that derided Islam and the Holy Qur##an. The warning, obviously published by Kamel, can potentially acquit Kamel.
