This year’s Palm Sunday witnessed an incident of discrimination against Copts in Beni Sweif, Upper Egypt. In Beni Sweif University, Professor Rabei Mohamed Osman insisted on scheduling the finals for his course in commerce on 8 April, Palm Sunday for Coptic students. The Coptic students who decided to exercise their officially-sanctioned right to a holiday on Palm Sunday were given failing marks. The same professor has scheduled another final on Maundy Thursday, also an official day off for Copts.
The Maspero Liberal Youth Movement submitted a complaint to the Military Council, and another to the Education Minister about the flagrant discrimination against Copts. They demanded that exams should not be scheduled on Coptic religious holidays, and that positive action should be taken against such illegal abuses.
