It took a night-long ‘conciliation’ session in the Beheira town of Abu-Hummos to avert an attack by the Muslim townsmen against the Copts.
The matter was sparked by an argument between the Coptic clan of Mossaad and the Muslim clan of Tulba, because a Mossaad woman had thrown garbage into a ditch adjacent to a mosque. The matter escalated into a street fight which resulted in nine both sides wounded. They were moved to hospital, but were directly released once their injuries, which the hospital described as superficial, were treated.
The local security officials, however, fearing the matter would grow into a fully-fledged attack against the Copts, hurriedly held a conciliation session to contain the tensions.
The session, according to the local priest Fr Yuil Sobhy, was held at the police station and attended by local politicians, clerics and sheikhs, as well as the elders of the town. They managed to calm matters down and regain peace in town.
