The Copts Without Restrictions (CWR) group has submitted a legal complaint against Sheikh Khalid Abdullah, a presenter at the Islamist-leaning al-Naass (The People) satellite channel; and Mahmoud Sultan, the executive editor-in-chief of the Cairo independent daily al-Misriyoun, accusing them of inciting against Copts, the Coptic Orthodox Church, and Copts Unfettered.
The group issued a statement in which it said that al-Misriyoun had posted on its website on 10 August 2012 a report under the title “Exchanges between the Church, fuloul (persons still loyal to the Mubarak regime), and the activist Abu-Hamed to overthrow the elected president”. The article carried unsubstantiated charges that Copts, the Church, and CWR were planning to collaborate with criminal elements to assault and torch the Muslim Brotherhood headquarters in Muqattam, Cairo, and to besiege the presidential palace.
The statement said that such allegations had the serious potential of stirring hatred, if not an outright attack, against Copts.
