The 25-year-old Albeir Saber Ayad who was last Thursday arrested by the police for sharing online the link of the film that disdains the Prophet Mohamed, has been detained by order of the prosecution pending investigation
The prosecution has ordered a medical investigation for Ayad who suffers several injuries and bruises. His sister Naglaa’ claims he has been beaten up while in the police station.
Ayad’s Tharwat Bekheet criticised the young man’s arrest, saying there was no law against sharing a link for a film online; Islamic TV channels, he said, were themselves airing parts of the film.
“There is general apprehension among the Copts that the film incident would be used as a prerogative to target Copts with false claims of deriding Islam. Several incidents have occurred earlier this year in which Copts were caught or sentenced upon shaky evidence for disdaining Islam. Two men from Assiut, Makarem Diab and Gamal Massoud are now imprisoned, and Bishoi Kameel from Sohag, Upper Egypt is currently standing trial,” Bekheet said.
Bekheet called for a halt to the targeting of Copts to appease Islamists.
