The shrine of Sayed Ali Zein al-Abideen, which is annexed to the mosque that bears his name in the Cairo district of al-Sayeda Zeinab, has reopened following a meticulous 10-month-long renovation process conducted by the Ministry of Antiquities.
The newly renovated shrine was opened by Muhammad Abdel-Latif, Assistant to the Minister of Antiquities, and Head of the Islamic and Coptic Antiquities Sector.
The mosque was built in the 12th century during the Fatimid era, but fell into decline; the only part remaining from that period is an inner corridor the walls of which carry inscriptions that date back to 1154. It was later rebuilt during the Ottoman era, and renovated several times in subsequent centuries till 1999.
