On calligraphy
Last week 90 scholars from 16 countries gathered at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Calligraphy Centre for the Fourth International Forum on Calligraphy, Writings and Inscriptions in the World throughout the Ages. With a theme which centred on “Coins in the World”, the Forum covered topics on the origin of coins, coin mintage, coin inscriptions, and banknotes. It aimed at strengthening the ongoing dialogue about the history of banknotes and coins, recognising the different inscriptions and writings on coins in the world. The Forum was accompanied by the exhibition “Coins and Poetry: K. Kavafis” which runs till the end of this month and displays a rare collection of old European money. Konstantine Kavafis was a 20th century Alexandrian poet, a large part of whose poetry was inspired by the images and inscriptions on money.
Celebrating science
From 1 to 3 April the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, jointly with the Education Ministry, holds its third annual science celebration, sponsored by the Petroleum Ministry. This year’s topic will be “Energy”. A “Science Village” will be set up in the BA courtyard on 1 and 2 April, and in Antoniadis Gardens on 3 April, and will host, besides the usual lectures and seminars, a number of interactive activities on scientific experiences. The modern Egyptian music band Masaar Igbari will perform in honour of the occasion.
