Cairo music lovers were treated to an evening of exquisite piano playing by the Egyptian Russian-born pianist Magda Emara Thursday 17 December. At the Cairo Opera House’s Small Hall, Ms Emara enchanted audiences with a repertoire that included Rachmaninoff’s Sonata No. 2, Tchaikovsky’s Dumka, and Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 7.
Ms Emara was born in Russia to Egyptian parents, studied at Moscow’s Conservatoire, and went on to become a sought-after soloist who played in many world capitals. She won—among many others—first prizes in the Jeunesse Musicalies in Bucharest in 1998, the Moscow open piano competition in 2003, and the International Gaydamovich chamber music competition-Magnitagorsk 2007.
