Thursday 6 October at precisely 2:00 pm Radio Kemet launched its broadcast in Cairo metro stations. Kemet is the ancient Egyptian name for Egypt, and the timing to launch was chosen to coincide with the 1973 crossing of the Suez Canal by the Egyptian army into Israeli-occupied Sinai. The war that ensued led to a peace treaty with Israel in 1979 according to which Egypt regained Sinai in 1982.

Kemet FM launched its broadcast in metro stations of Cairo’s second and third metro lines and a number of stations on the first line. The broadcast will cover all stations once the infrastructure for broadcast is complete.

Kemet FM addresses the various sectors of Egyptians with music, social, comic, historical and sports programmes, focusing on Egyptian culture, heritage, and folklore.

The idea behind the broadcast is to revive Egyptianess in the face of what many in Egypt see as attempts to promote Arab-Islamic identity and culture to replace the Egyptian values. The idea is the brainchild of Tamer Shalaan, General Manager of Kemet Group and Kemet FM; Ahmed Mashal, Executive Director of Kemet Group; poet Ayman Massoud, Head of the programme planning; and Ahmed Rady, its Technical Manager.
