As Egyptians celebrated New Year Eve 2014, Ihab Ghattas Sidaros was shot by an Islamist mob in front of the church of Mar-Girgis in Ain Shams, Cairo. Sidaros was in his early twenties,
a university student majoring in commerce, and comes from the town of Maghagha in Upper Egypt
Sidaros breathed his last early this morning. In the absence of any official report by the authorities, stories of eyewitnesses diverge between Sidaros having been shot in the head or in the throat. Islamists attempted a few other attacks on Cairo churches, among them the Holy Virgin’s in Zeitoun, and the Archangel Mikhail in Helwan, which were all foiled by the locals and the police.
