Millions of children over Egypt have been administered the polio vaccine during the polio vaccination campaign conducted by the Ministry of Health last week. The four-day campaign targeted some 15 million children, five years old and under, of Egyptians and non-Egyptians residing in Egypt, with the aim of boosting their immunity against polio.
In rural areas, the campaign went door-to-door in order to reach all children. In towns and urban areas, the Ministry of Health teams were stationed inside or in the vicinity of medical centres, maternal and child care centres, churches, mosques, sports and social clubs, markets, train and underground stations, public parking lots and public parks.
In 2006, the World Health Organisation declared Egypt free of Polio; the Egyptian Ministry of Health is striving to maintain it so.
