The Isalmists in the town of al-Wasta in Beni Sweif, some 100km south of Cairo, were behind a decision by Beni Sweif governor Maher Beibars for the educational department to issue a decision to segregate boys and girls in all the various educational stages, starting with kindergarten. The move illustrates the ground gained by Islamists in Beni Sweif. A school in the village of Atfa cancelled, on its own, Music classes.
Both incidents come only a few days after Islamists pressured Mr Beibars to move Sharbat Taha Hassaan from her position as head of the local government unit of the village of Eshment to an administrative post. They insisted they would have no woman in charge of their affairs.
