The Belgian royal family: Philippe, King of the Belgians; Queen Mathilde; and their four children are in Egypt for New Year holidays. They arrived at Cairo Airport on EgyptAir flights, the King flew from Frankfurt while his wife arrived from Amsterdam, on the evening of Wednesday 26 December, and headed to the southern city of Aswan the following day. They stayed at the venerable Old Cataract Hotel which has a history of hosting royalty and distinguished guests from over the world.
Amid tight security, the royals visited the ancient temples and the sites at Aswan. Local residents were thrilled to glimpse them browsing in Aswan’s Suq, the marketplace.
Boarding a Nile cruise boat, the royals sailed northwards to Luxor where they arrived in time to celebrate the New Year. They will be visiting the legendary ancient Egyptian sites in Luxor.
