The month of March boasts three days for women. The date 8 March is International Women’s Day, a global day that celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world and has, for 117 years, called for accelerating gender parity. Less than a week later, on 16 March, Egypt marks Egyptian Women’s Day, commemorating the day in 1919 when women in Egypt for the first time in centuries left their homes to join in a public cause, this time against the British colonials who occupied Egypt; Hameida Khalil lost her life in the process. The Egyptian feminist movement, led by Hoda Shaarawi and Egypt’s enlightenment figures, was in its heyday; today Egyptian women live full lives in careers, public offices, and at home.
The date 21 March crowns the celebration of women with Mothers Day.
Watani wishes all women pleasant, warm days filled with love and sense of achievement.
