The European Union (EU) Delegation to Egypt organised a beach clean-up in Alexandria on 15 September 2018, International Coastal Clean-up Day, in collaboration with Alexandria Governorate and Greenish.
The initiative brought together 300 volunteers from Alexandria aiming to clean-up the 2km long al-Saraya public beach.
Participating in the event was General Hamdy al-Hashash, Assistant Secretary-General of the governorate. He represented Alexandria Governor Abdel-Aziz Qansawa.
Volunteers and beach visitors were introduced to the importance of recycling and waste sorting, ways of minimizing waste of energy and water resources, risks of plastic to marine life, and how to reduce the use of plastic materials.
Participants received giveaways and awards of refillable bottles and reusable bags as substitute to single-use plastic products.
The EU beach clean-up day was accompanied by a social media campaign to raise awareness about the harms of waste to marine life and public health, and alternatives to single-use plastic products.
