The US Embassy and AMIDEAST held their annual StudyUSA Education Fair in Cairo at the Smart Village, last Friday, and in Alexandria last Saturday at Schutz American School.
The StudyUSA Education Fair this year hosted 20 US higher educational institutions from various parts of the United States, as well as overseas American institutions with branches in the Middle East and Europe. At the fair, students were able to meet with university representatives and discuss admission requirements, procedures for examinations, fields of study, housing, expenses, and the availability of financial aid and scholarships. The Cultural Affairs Section of the US Embassy had a special booth to provide information on various exchange programme opportunities in the United States.
Participating universities included: Boston University, Florida Institute of Technology, George Mason University, Hawaii Pacific University, Indiana Purdue IUPUI, New York Film Academy, Savannah College of Art and Design, Suffolk University, SUNY Plattsburgh, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, American University of Rome, Deree – The American College of Greece, Hult International Business School – Dubai, Glion Institute of Higher Education, New York University-Abu Dhabi, Georgetown University-Qatar, Bentley University, and Paris College of Art-Ecole Parsons a Paris.
Chikudo and Friends
The Japan Foundation in Cairo office has arranged for two concerts by the traditional Japanese music band ‘Chikudo and Friends’ on 22 October at al-Sawy Cultural Wheel in Cairo, and on 23 October at the Cairo Opera House. The Egyptian qanun player Saber Abdel-Sattar and the musician Amir Ezzat will participate in the of Cairo Opera House concert.
Medical aid from Japan
The Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GAGP) programme has donated, through the Japanese embassy in Cairo, the sum of USD 53,833 the Association of Environment Protection and Use of Solar Energy (AEPUSE) in the West Delta governorate of Beheira. The money is to be used to purchase a medical checkup vehicle equipped with medical devices such as ultra-sound radiology, ventilator and defibrillator.
Last Thursday, Ambassador Norihiro Okuda of Japan attended the opening ceremony of the Project for Improvement of Medical Service in al-Beheira, run by AEPUSE, and met a number of the patients who are benefitting from the vehicle. The beneficiaries, who will be able to receive developed and affordable medical checkup services and first aid, will include the people of New Nubariya town and seven villages in its vicinity.
This is the first equipped medical checkup vehicle to be used in the villages of New Nubariya where the locals had strongly aspired to upgraded medical services.
Cornea transplant from France
The French-Egyptian medical association, the French institute in Egypt and a number of French ophthalmologists have arranged for the performance of cornea transplantation surgeries to Egyptian children aged between eight and 12. The French team, lead by Dr Pascal Doro and Dr Laurence Degardin, visited Egypt from 5 to 10 October to perform the surgeries. During the visit, the team attended various conferences to exchange experience with Egyptian ophthalmologists.
Doro and Degardin met their counterparts of Qasr al-Ainy Hospital, the eye centre of al-Mansoura University and those of Alexandria University.
An awareness campaign on the blindness programme “Vision 2020: The Right to Sight” was conducted by several Egyptian NGOs on 7 October, in which the visually impaired children of al-Nour wal-Amal (Light and Hope) Orchestra gave a stunning concert.
Glimpses of India
The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) is organising the 18th annual painting competition “Glimpses of India” for school children from 7 to 17 October. The competition involves children between the ages of six and 12 years for primary stage, from 13 to 15 for preparatory stage and from 16 to 18 for secondary stage. The number of children participating in the competition is expected to reach 3000. MACIC has invited students of governmental and private schools and national institutes of Cairo, Giza, Helwan and 6 October district.
A specialised jury will select 100 winning paintings from the 15 sections of the competition in addition to 25 students from the schools of the disabled. MACIC will hold a ceremony on 31 October at Gumhouriya Theatre in Cairo to deliver the winning certificates, medals and awards.
