From 31 October to 4 November, the Swedish Institute in Alexandria, SwedAlex, held ‘WomenX- Echoes’ workshop on “Sound and Sisterhood: Exploring Music and Communication from a Female Perspective”. Ten female musicians used their different voices in a musical, emotional and intellectual musical dialogue and together explored and created new musical pieces together.
The workshop aimed at empowering participants through learning recording technology and live sound processing, finding solidarity with other female musicians through shared experiences, and learning the practicalities of the music business such as marketing, publishing, labels.
The musical workshop was part of SwedAlex’s WOMEN X ongoing programme which was launched in 2015 with the objective of expanding narrative spaces for female voices, expressing themselves through different forms of art. The scope of the programme does not only cover Egypt, but also the MENA region, with wide participation from artists, thinkers, musicians and cultural actors in the region in addition to European participants and trainers.
The direct output of the project was that SwedAlex organised a concert entitled “Women X- Echoes” in partnership with Jesuit Cultural Center featuring international guest stars Rebekka Karijord and Julia Kent in addition to a number of young, talented Egyptian female musicians.
