Egyptian women won both singles matches and took an unassailable 2-0 lead against their English opponents in the gold medal match at the Xigang Gymnasium, securing thus their rank as world champions.
Egypt started off with what seemed like a blow when, before the match began, the world number one Nour al-Sherbini could not play because of ankle injury. She had to be replaced with world number six Nouran Gohar who stepped in to give Egypt the lead in the tie with 11-9, 11-9, 6-11, 7-11, 11-7 win against Alison Waters.
Raneem al-Welily then sealed Egypt’s fifth women’s world team crown as she defeating Laura Massaro 11-3, 11-8, 9-11, 11-3.
