Field Marshall Hussien Tantawi yesterday received a phone call from UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon regarding the upcoming elections as well as the peaceful and organized change of power from the Military Council (MC) to a civilian authority. Ban Ki Moon expressed his concern over the continued violence in Egypt.
The phone call came at a time when the MC has failed to contain public anger at the slow transfer of power and at the assignment of Dr Kamal al-Ganzoury as the new Prime Minister.
Despite the crowds camping in Tahrir Square and the nearby cabinet premises insisting that Ganzouri should not take office, a sizeable portion of the Egyptian public has been vocally calling for the contrary and denouncing the Tahrir unrest. An online poll by Watani revealed that 71 per cent of those polled support a new government headed by Ganzouri with the MC remaining in power till the presidential elections in 2012, to the demands by the Tahrir Square revolutionists that the MC should step down and hand over power to a cabinet headed by a person nominated by the revolutionaries.
