Just as Mohamed al-Biltagi, a member of the higher council of the Freedom and Justice Islamic Party announced that the party will not curb the freedom of Egyptians, Mohamed Saad al-Katatni, the chairman of the same party told a group of tour guides that the party will create a fatwa council that will approve all and any matter that concerns tourism and touristic issues before any decisions in this concern are taken.
“This is alarming,” announced Ihab Moussa, head of the Tour Guides Union, during a demonstration of tour guides against what they see as a threat to their jobs and livelihood if Islamists take over power in Egypt. Islamic parties had declared that swimwear on beaches and serving alcohol to tourists is against Islamic sharia and norms, and that they would only allow “Islamic tourism”. Moussa said that creating a fatwa council ultimately means taking over all aspects of our lives.
