A Giza Appeals Court has acquitted top Egyptian comedian Adel Imam from charges of disdaining Islam. Last April, Imam was sentenced by a lower court to three months in prison and a EGP1000 fine, after an Islamist lawyer brought a case against him for acting in films that derided Islam.
“After studying the case’s file and viewing the scenes and the films on which the charge is based, the court’s conscience found the accused not guilty,” the acquittal pronouncement read. The court said it found no disdainful material in Imam’s films; rather, it found that Imam’s work highlighted the negative side of the radical behavioural patterns normally rejected by the community.
