A Cairo court yesterday sentenced the Islamist scholar Sheikh Abdullah Badr to one year in prison and a EGP20,000 fine, for libeling the film star Ilham Shahin.
Back in September, Badr who is a professor at al-Azhar but nevertheless adopts radical ideas, had waged a scathing verbal attack against Shahin on the Islamist satellite channel al-Hafez, going so far as to describe her as an adultress, and faking obscene pictures of her. Shahin filed the libel case.
