On 10 Ramadan, 26 May, Pope Tawadros II attended a Ramadan iftar banquet n invitation by the Armed Forces which was celebrating the Hijri date of its great victory 45 years ago. Back then, the date 10 Ramadan coincided with 6 October 1973 when the Egyptian Army crossed the Suez Canal into Sinai, and conquered the Bar Lev Line which had been touted by the Israelis as “invincible”. Egypt thus effectively took the first step towards winning back what it had lost during the Six Day War in 1967, and signing a peace treaty with Israel in 1979.
Ramadan is the Muslim holy month in which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset; the iftar meal is the sunset meal of breaking the fast. President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and al-Azhar Grand Imam, Sheikh Ahmad al-Tayyeb, attended the iftar banquet, as did top-ranking State and military officials.
