Manal al-Tayyibi, who represents Nubia in the Constituent Assembly that is currently drafting a new constitution for Egypt, today announced her resignation from the assembly in protest against what she described as adamant attempts to produce a Wahhabi constitution that would root an Islamist State in Egypt.
In a press conference held in Cairo this evening, Ms Tayyibi said that 22 of the 100-person assembly were granted high-ranking posts in State institutions; “bribes,” she said, “to produce an Islamist constitution that would serve the interests of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) whose members currently hold power in Egypt.”
“Egypt is about to get the worst constitution in its history,” Tayyibi insisted, “A constitution which curtails freedoms and the rights of minorities, women and children.”
