With the purpose of opening dialogue during a time when coexistence has become a priority issue, a high-level delegation from the Evangelical Church in Egypt yesterday paid a visit to the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) at their headquarters in Muqattam, Cairo. The MB said they will be reciprocating with a visit to the Evangelical Church on 13 March.
The meeting resulted in a joint statement which stressed the importance of dialogue, freedom of belief, freedom of practicing religious rites, the right to build and restore places of worship as regulated by the law, and the right of the members of each religion to follow their own principles where family matters are concerned. Social responsibility, the statement declared, obligates all religious movements and associations to combat all forms of fanaticism, strife and discrimination, and to support the community’s safety and unity.
According to Andrea Zaki, deputy to the head of the Evangelical Church in Egypt, the aim of the visit was religious not political.
The 10-member Evangelical delegation was headed by Safwat al-Bayadi, head of the Evangelical sect, Dr Zaki. Rafiq Habib, vice-president of MB##s Freedom and Justice Party, participated in his double capacity as official in both the MB and Evangelical associations. Participating on the MB side were the Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie, the former supreme guide Mahdy Akef, the deputy guide Rashad Bayoumi, and guidance office member Hussam Abu-Bakr.
