The candidate commission for the papal elections has only received a few contests against the 17 candidates for the post of patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church, Judge Malak Mina who is a member of the commission, told Watani. Rumours of there being a large number of contests are not true, Mr Mina said. In all cases, he said, contests will not be looked into except after the deadline for submitting contests transpires on 30 September.
A three-day fast will be declared by the Church on 1 October, after which the commission will retreat to a desert monastery to begin the process of short listing the 17 candidates to seven or five, among whom the eligible voters will elect three. A lot will be cast among these three names during Holy Mass, and winner will be the new pope. This is expected to take place on 2 December.
