Fire in a small church in Imbaba highlights everything that’s wrong
The two upper floors of the building were found to have suffered irreparable damage, so the construction workers are pulling them down in order to rebuild them. The electric system of the church has been installed, and the facade repainted. The restoration and rebuilding work is being done so as to fulfil all civil defence requirements, which had been lacking in the old building that went up in flames.
The Armed Forces are restoring the church at the command of President Sisi.
Investigations by the public prosecution have revealed that there was no criminal intent behind the fire which was caused by electric malfunction. The prosecution report said that the fire had erupted in an electric generator installed some five years ago, the electric system and external wiring of which was altogether inadequate. It also said that it had reached this conclusion through the official technical report, and through the testimonies of 33 witnesses.
During a Cabinet meeting today, 18 August, Social Solidarity Minister Nevine al-Kabbag said that the compensation sums promised by the government to the victims’ families and to the injured have been paid.
