Dr Samy Fawzy, Archbishop of the Episcopal/Anglican Province of Alexandria, has twice celebrated Christmas Liturgy in Qanater al-Khairiya Prison Complex, once with the men and another with the women prisoners.
The celebrations were made in coordination with Egypt’s Ministry of Interior, and attended by a number of priests, Church servants, and a large number of Egyptian and non-Egyptian prisoners.
Following the Liturgy, Archbishop Fawzy handed the prisoners Christmas gifts.
The Anglican Church in Egypt has been for more than 20 years active in prison service, both spiritually and materially, especially given that the prisoners include a number of non-Egyptians who have no family in Egypt to visit or care for them.
Rev. Yashoua Bekhit is in charge of the prison service. He pays monthly visits to the prisons, providing the prisoners with foodstuffs and clothes, and taking care of their spiritual needs through monthly meetings and sermons.
