After 65 years as a monk, Fr Angaelos al-Antouni passed away on 14 July 2020. Born in the southern city of Sohag in 1933, Fr Angaelos took orders at the monastery of Anba Antonios in Egypt’s Eastern Desert in 1955. He was 22.
In 1960, he received a degree in theology from the school of monks in Helwan. From 1963 till 1974, he served in Jerusalem, then moved in 1976 to the church of Mar-Girgis (St George) in the village of Saft al-Sharqiya in Minya.
Fr Angaelos established the Monastery of Mar-Poctor in Khatatba, which was approved as a thriving monastery by the Coptic Orthodox Holy Synod in 2017. A year later, Pope Tawadros consecrated the churches of the monastery.
As a spiritual guide for thousands Copts in Egypt and the Diaspora, Fr Angaelos was famous as a skilled exorcist and a clairvoyant.
But even more, he will be lovingly remembered for his kindness, gentleness, and true humbleness. He was seen by many as a pillar of ascetic monasticism in our modern times. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
