Anba Barsoum, Metropolitan of Sanabu and Dairut, presided over Vespers incense prayers on 29 April at the ruins of the burnt down church of the Holy Virgin, Archangel Michael, Abu-Seifein, and Anba Karass in Dairut, some 340km south of Cairo.
A statement by the diocese was issued that morning, informing that a large fire had erupted at 4am because of a gas leak from a butane cylinder used for the oven in which the sacrament bread was prepared.
No casualties were reported, and no damage was caused to the houses or schools around the church, the statement said, but the wooden built church and the old church, also the buildings annexed to it—all made of wood—were entirely destroyed by the flames.
The firefighters rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire, the diocese said.
The diocese praised and thanked the firefighters and the neighbours for their efforts to put out the fire.
