The District attorney of Qena, Mohamed Moqbel, has pressed charges against the two perpetrators al-Hussieni Kamal Mubarak Sadeq and Alaa Abdel-Sattar Ali (fugitives) in collaboration with a third unknown person for cutting off the ear of Ayman Anwar Mitry,54, as well as torching his apartment and stealing a sum of money and some of Mitry’s belongings. The defendants are charged with vicious beating that led to permanent, non-treatable disability, as well as destruction of private property.
Mitry had been attacked by Salafi Islamists last March for renting his flat in Qena, Upper Egypt, to two young women whom the hardline Islamists considered indecent. The Salafis insisted on cutting the Copt’s ear as an execution of Islamic hudoud (Islamic penalties). They later forced Mitry to ‘reconcile’ with them by threatening to attack his family. The ‘reconciliation’ meant Mitry had to relinquish his legal rights.
