Pope Tawadros II has postponed his visit to President Mursi, which was to take place today at the presidential palace in Cairo, after the President’s sister, Fatma Mursi, passed away late last evening. Ms Mursi was 57, and died of cancer.
President Mursi had asked the Pope over to the presidential palace in order to congratulate him for his enthronement, a move which enraged Coptic youth who described it as arrogant and disrespectful towards the Church and her newly enthroned Pope. The Pope on his part commented that it was a routine visit for the President and Pope get to know each other. Under the circumstances, however, it will have to be postponed it till the President returns from attending his sister’s funeral in his hometown in the East Delta region of Sharqiya.
Pope Tawadros will then visit President Mursi to present his condolences.
