Dreams
The Doroub gallery in Garden City, Cairo, is holding an exhibition of the works of Said al-Gazar, whose upbringing was greatly influenced by the heavily-populated district of Sayeda Zeinab. Gazar has held a retrospective vision of Sayeda Zeinab since early childhood, and he expresses this by depicting crowds and folkloric scenes of local mawalid (popular feasts). Touches of the brush in Gazar’s paintings make the viewer feel that the artist moves somewhere between dream and reality. The 30 paintings, all executed within a five-year period, show how masterfully Gazar conveys the moments and memories in his vision. He does this with his own very special style and the blending of gouache with inks. The exhibition ends tonight.
Tafaneen
From 14 to 31 October the Khan Maghrabi art gallery in Zamalek, Cairo, is hosting a collective exhibition entitled “Tafaneen” (Playing with art) and showing the works of Tanseem al-Mashad, Sherine Abdel-Gawad, and Ramadan Abdel-Moatamed. An Egyptian-Oriental theme is easily observed through the folkloric motifs commonly used in all the works, both paintings and clay sculptures.
Horizon
Earlier this month the Ibdaa art gallery in Mohandiseen, Giza, hosted an exhibition by the artist Mohamed al-Tarawi. The 40 watercolours depicted scenes and locations seen from a perspective across the horizon. Tarawi as a representative of Egypt has dedicated a painting to the World Trade Organisation in Paris.
