The Cairo Opera House tonight heralds in the New Year 2018 with six concerts in the three opera houses affiliated to it in Egypt.
Ines Abdel-Dayem, Head of the Cairo Pers House, says that the opera theatres in Cairo, Alexandria, and Damanhour in the west Delta have been decorated inside out for the festive season. Visitors are received with colourful lights, Christmas trees, and Saint Claus, and of course the New Year musical performances.
The Main Hall at the Cairo Opera House hosts the Cairo Symphony Orchestra conducted by Greek conductor Vasilis Tsiatsianis and featuring Hungarian soloist, Soprano Nicoleta Radu with A Cappela Choir. The same concert is scheduled for the following day at Sayed Darwish Theatre; the Alexandria Opera House.
A number of concerts are planned for tonight at other opera venues. The Small Hall of the Cairo Opera House features a performance by Eman Shaker and her ensemble “The Friends”. Gomhouriya Theatre hosts the Arab Music Institute ensemble which will present a number of Christmas carols side-by-side with oriental music of the songs of the legendary Egyptian diva Umm Kulthoum (1904 – 1975); the concert is conducted by Salah Ghobashy.
Damanhour Opera theatre will be presenting a selection of Arab music and songs perfomed by singer Yasser Suliman and his band.
“The great interest in the Opera concerts in general and in New Year Eve performances in specific reflects the keen interest of Egyptians and fine music,” Ms Abdel-Dayem noted. “We are there to cater to them.”
