During the period from January 2023 to May 2023, doctors and staff of Egypt’s Ministry of Health have followed up on more than 61,903 patients who had had surgeries according to the presidential initiative of ending waiting lists for the free surgeries offered by the country’s State-paid treatment and health insurance for government employees. The figures were cited on 24 May by Health Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar. During that period, Mr Abdel-Ghaffar said, the Ministry’s hotline received 27,338 requests for surgeries.
Dr Abdel-Ghaffar said that 1,703,035 surgeries had been performed on patients ever since the initiative was launched in July 2018. These included heart surgeries, bone surgeries; cataracts, tumours, cerebral catheters, heart catheterisation, brain and nerve surgeries, kidney and liver transplants, and cochlear implants.
Worth noting is that the initiative led to implementation of an electronic database and system that links patient needs with the available capacities of various hospitals
Patients requiring surgery can register their names and needs on an online Health Ministry service, or may contact the hotline 15300 assigned by the Ministry for that purpose.
