Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population, Hala Zayed, has received renowned heart surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub to discuss cooperation between the Ministry of Health and the Magdi Yacoub Foundation (MYF). According to the Health Ministry spokesperson Khaled Megahed, Dr Zayed had earlier issued a decision to establish clinical research departments in the hospitals affiliated to the ministry. Dr Zayed thus sought the support of MYF in establishing those departments which are set to be in direct contact with the central administration for health research and development. The medical teams working in these new departments are expected to benefit from specialised training in the field of research.
For his part, Sir Magdi commended the decision to create clinical research departments in the ministry-affiliated hospitals, highlighting the great impact of clinical research on improving the entire health system. Sir Magdi promised to provide the ministry with maximum support and cooperation.
During the meeting, Sir Magdi praised the care given by the Ministry of Health to the health of Egyptians through the implementation of the various presidential health initiatives, such as those to combat hepatitis virus C and breast cancer. He also applauded the ministry’s handling of the COVID-19 file.
The MYF was founded in Aswan in 2009 by Sir Magdi Yacoub. It offers top class medical services to heart patients of all Egypt and the region free of charge; it operates through donations.
This is not the first time the Ministry of Health seeks help from the MYF. More than two years ago, Dr Zayed had met with Sir Magdi, and it was agreed that MYF would help establish the Paediatric Cardiac Surgery Unit al-Nasr public hospital in Port Said.
