During Mass on Sunday 20 November 2022 at St Mark’s Cathedral in Abassiya, Cairo, Pope Tawadros II elevated ten Coptic bishops to the ranks of metropolitans. A large number of bishops from among the Coptic Orthodox Church’s Holy Synod joined the Pope in celebrating Mass.
In a letter to the bishops before the elevation ritual, Pope Tawadros said: “It gives me pleasure to invite you to Mass at St Mark’s Cathedral in Abassiya on 20 November to celebrate over 30 years of your noble episcopal service to your dioceses. Your ministry was characterised by hard work, dedication and tears, and yielded abundant fruit. In recognition of this, we will elevate you, together with other bishops, to the venerable rank of Metropolitan.”
The ten bishops elevated to metropolitans are:
- Anba Demetrius of Mallawi, Ansena, and Ashmonin; and Abbot of the monsters of Abu-Fana and the convent of al-Batoul in Minya.
- Anba Barsoum of Dairout and Sanabu; and Abbot of the convent of the Holy Virgin and Archangel Michael in Dairout.
- Anba Bakhoum of Sohag, al-Manshat, and al- Maragha.
- Anba Aghapius of Deir Muwwas and Dalaga in Minya.
- Anba Danial of Maadi and its affiliate districts; and Secretary-General of the Holy Synod.
- Anba Thomas of Qoussiya and Meir in Assiut.
- Anba Maximos of Banha, Qouessna, and their affiliate districts.
- Anba Takla of Deshna and it’s affiliate districts.
- Anba Youssef of Southern US, and Abbot of the monastery of the Holy Virgin and Anba Moussa in Texas.
- Anba Sharoubim of Qena, Quft, and their affiliate districts.
