Maya Morsi, head of Egypt’s National Council of Women (NCW), has won membership in the UN’s Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) for the period 2023-2026. Ms Morsy’s win came about with 126 votes in the elections held at the UN premises in New York.
Egypt’s Permanent Delegate to the UN Osama Abdel-Khaleq said Ms Morsy won the fourth rank in the highest votes among 23 nominees competing over 12 seats. He said that intensive efforts had been made by the Foreign Ministry and Egypt’s embassies abroad, also the Permanent Mission to the UN, to secure the necessary votes for the Egyptian nominee in what was a hard competition.
Mr Abdel Khaleq expressed deep thanks for the participating delegations over their support to the Egyptian nominee, noting that Ms Morsi is highly professional and has vast expertise on women issues.
CEDAW comprises 23 independent experts who have vast qualifications and outstanding expertise in women-related issues.
